  1. Sparkle 2.1 A mac-look-and-feel MPEG and QT player and converter.

  3. This should replace Sparkle 2.02 in the info-mac archives.
  4. This is a massive overhaul of your favorite MPEG program. The most 
  5. notable changes are 
  6. * Much faster playback---especially on 8bit screens. Fast playback 
  7.   requires compromising image quality. If you don't like the compromises
  8.   I made, change them---look at Preferences under the Edit menu.
  9.   Don't worry---when you save an MPEG file as a different file, modes 
  10.   are changed so that the file is saved at the best possible quality.
  11. * Realtime playback, dropping frames if necessary. Also the MovieController
  12.   adjustable rate setting (control-click on the step buttons) now works 
  13.   with MPEGs.
  14. * Resizable windows.
  15. * Conversion of a set of PICTs to a movie or MPEG.
  16. * Intelligent window tiling, even with oversize windows and multiple 
  17.   screens of different depths. To see this, open two or more movies at 
  18.   once.
  19. And literally hundreds of small changes all the way through the code. 
  20. Look through the menus, try the tab, shift-tab and control-tab keys, 
  21. and read the ``What's New in 2.1'' file for full details.
  22. If you've suggested a feature to me in the past, it may well be 
  23. implemented in this release, though maybe not in the way you expected. 
  24. Try out whatever it was that you were hoping for and see if it works.

  27. * is not PPC native
  28. * does not support sound
  29. * does not support apple events
  30. * does not support online help
  31. These are all high priorities, pretty much in that order.

  33. As always, if you find any bug or anomaly in this code please tell me. 
  34. The sooner you tell me, the sooner I'll fix it.
  35. As always there remain a few rough edges to this program, though I hope 
  36. most of them won't be too distressing to users. Like previous rough 
  37. edges, they'll be done away with in time.

  40. !!! If you write to me PLEASE give me a decent address I can reply to.
  41. !!!    About 10% of the e-mail I receive has a bogus return address---I try 
  42. !!!    to reply to you and a few hours or days later I get a message from the 
  43. !!!    mail system that my mail could not be delivered.
  44. !!!    This is very frustrating to me and a waste of your and my time. 
  45. !!!    I have NEVER just ignored mail sent to me about Sparkle. If I don't 
  46. !!!    reply to you, it's because you sent me mail with a garbage return address.
  47. !!!    Check out your mail system and write to me again when it works properly.

  50. WHAT IS IT?
  51. Sparkle plays MPEGs and QT movies and converts between them. It is
  52. multifinder friendly and, with enough memory, will open multiple 
  53. documents at once.
  54. It is free. I ask only that you read the enclosed README file and if you 
  55. can help with any of the issues I raise there, you mail me.
